Depicting key elements of the Napoleonic Campaigns & Allied Victory.
The Scarf design is based on the Battle Map of Napoleon's decisive victory at the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805. Also referred to as "The Battle of the Three Emperors".
It also features details from Minard's 1869 Map of Napoleon's retreat from Russia. Widely regarded as the best statistical graphic ever created. The Creator, Charles Joseph Minard was a French Civil Engineer.
The Graph shows six variables; Troop size, geographic location, direction of movement, latitude and longitude, passing dates and freezing Winter temperatures. On a single two dimensional page.
The Advance shown with a Tan band shows the Grand Armee marching into Russia with approx, 422,000 men.
The Retreat a thick Black band shows the catastrophic retreat from Moscow, where the Army shrank down to just 10,000 men.
The Temperature, a live Chart at the bottom links the dropping temperatures in sub zero Winter weather to the accelerating death toll.
This French invasion of Russia in 1812, a Campaign led by Napoleon, ended in catastrophe and a decimated Grand Armee.
