Design based on a World Map of Empire, dating back to early 20th Century when the British Empire dominated 26% of the Earth geographically.  At it's height in the 19th and early 20th Centuries, it was the largest Empire in History and for a Century was the foremost Global power.

British Empire Territories were Coloured Pink on the map during this period, spreading from Canada in the West to Australia and New Zealand in the East... taking in much of Africa and India.

As the World Wars took their toll not only on the Empire, but also the Colonial reach, a process of Independence took place for all the former Colonies.  Starting with Afghanistan in 1919 and the final former Colonies winding down relinquishment of British Power and their gaining their own Independence, up until the late 1980's in the cases of Zimbabwe, Antigua & Barbuda, Belize, Brunei, Vanuatu, Australia and Canada.

A Vintage "Mercators Projection World Map" - denoting Territories of Empire.  The Mercator Projection is a cylindrical map projection introduced by the Flemish geographer Geradus Mercator in 1569 that represents lines of constant compass bearing as straight lines, making it a historic standard for navigation and digital web mapping.

Created by imagining a cylinder wrapped around the globe, touching it at the Equator.

Meridians are equally spaced vertical lines, whilst horizontal parallels of latitude get spaced increasingly further apart towards the Poles.

It is a conformal projection which means is preserves local shapes and angles accurately.  This Map was essential to Sailors, a straight line drawn on the map corresponds to a constant compass direction (Rhumb Line).  It also forms the basis of the Web Mercator projection, used by online mapping tools.

There are obvious limitations with this form of Map.  Landmasses grow larger the farther they are away from the Equator - High Latitude Inflation.

Greenland traditionally appears the same size as the Continent of Africa, on these traditional Mercator Maps, whereas in reality Africa is about x14 the size!

The UN General Assembly recently adopted a resolution encouraging alternative representations, like the Equal Earth projection to reflect true landmass proportions more accurately.
